Happy December Eve! I hope you all had a very happy Thanksgiving with your families. It is finally the season we have all been waiting for. With the start of the final month of the decade, I want to take advantage of this last day to prepare for a month of reflection, gratefulness, and all things cozy by introducing you to something you may have never heard of before: hygge (pronounced hue-guh). Hygge is essentially the art of all things cozy. It is a Scandinavian practice that consists of creating a feeling of calmness, comfort, coziness, and warmth while focusing on living a simple, meaningful life. I learned about hygge from a book called The Hygge Life and have been obsessed ever since. I am constantly trying to achieve hygge in my own life by implementing rituals and items into my space. I love looking up Pinterest photos of hygge to gain inspiration. While hygge can consist of many things, I do want to share some of my favorite ways that hygge can be achieved:
● Lighting: String lights, twinkle lights, candle light, lamps, a burning fireplace, you name it. Anything that gives off a warm glow can instantly change the atmosphere.
● Cozy blankets: Soft, fluffy, thick, warm, knit, furry, etc.
● Texture: Soft pajamas, oversized sweaters, fuzzy socks, cozy hates... warm, soft texture.
● Sitting in a relaxing space with your favorite hot drink: Coffee, wassail, hot cocoa, or hot tea. Find your favorite nook, chair, coffee shop, etc. Get comfortable.
● Hyggekrog (hygge nook): Create a space in your home dedicated to hygge. A cozy corner with pillows, blankets, candles, books, etc.
● Less technology: Hygge is interrupted when you are staring at your blue light screen on your phone or laptop. Read a book or write instead.
● Write, don't type: Write a letter, list, or journal entry. Don't add it to your notes on your phone or text it to someone. Find your finest pen and paper and practice the art of writing.
● Bake a comfort dish: A one pan meal, your favorite casserole, or even a pie.
● Surround yourself with neutral colors: Neutrals are calming and pleasing to the eye. Add a pale pop of color if you must, but start with neutral base. We are going for a warm vibe.
● Print and frame photos: Don't just scroll through instagram when you miss someone. Print your favorite photos of friends, family, and places you love.
● Hobby: Knitting, reading, drawing, creating.
● Relaxing Shower: Prepare for a relaxing shower by dimming the lights, lighting some candles, and setting out your favorite products. Diffuse your favorite oils and slip into your coziest fluffy robe afterwards.
● Take things slow and be intentional: Don't rush through each moment. Be intentional with your time and focus on appreciating everything and everyone around you. We get one life so we shouldn't worry about racing through because eventually we will reach the finish line.
